When I was a child, I dream of rivers and seas full of fishes jumping almost everywhere. Today, to realize my childhood dream, I help inspire fishers and coastal communities to establish no-take marine protected areas (MPA`s) and in campaigning against destructive fishing practices.
When MPAs or marine sanctuaries are established and well-enforced, fishes in the sanctuaries are given the chance to grow bigger and produce more offspring. When destructive fishing practices are eliminated, finite fisheries can become a sustainable resource to fuel social and economic growth of communities. By inspiring people to be engaged in marine conservation I am able to see my dreams into fruition and also help secure that communities have food in their table, now and in the future.
"It is first light, and MPA and fisheries biologist Erwin Brunio has come down to the water’s edge to record the returning fishers’ catch".
Steve Burrows, Asian Geographic, May 2003
"Erwin Brunio of Project Seahorse, for his part, suggested that the government allow fishermen to catch seahorses in the wild, except the young and pregnant ones. The government should also have a management plan for seahorse exports, he added."
"If we can engage communities in reporting violations in an anonymous and safe way, we can increase the number of community members participating in enforcement-related activities for MPA management," says Brunio. The more eyes there are watching an MPA, he says, the more effective it can be."
MPA News Vol11 No.1 , July-August 2009
"Erwin Brunio from Japan’s Graduate School of Marine Science and Technology (itself an interesting concept) presented on how enforcement in Philippino marine protected areas is being assisted by…the creation of anonymous community watchers scattered among islands armed with mobile phones to report violations."

"I find Erwin as a team player and able to connect to our project partners. His knowledge on coastal resource management such as marine protected area, participatory research, and fisheries enforcement was very helpful for the project."
Anecita Gulayan, Site Coordinator, Fisheries for Improved Sustainable Harvest Project (2003-2010)
"This bunch of students we were teaching were very interactive and some of them like Erwin were quite advanced both with respect to statistics and familiarity with R"
